In the run-up to the announcement of the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, more and more information about the smartphones appears. The latest rumor claims that the camera gets four new features, including an underwater mode.
Artificial intelligence in the camera
The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro become the latest flagships of Huawei, which officially presentsthe phones on October 16th . The manufacturer has already announced that both smartphones run on the new Kirin 980 processor. The powerful chipset focuses on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), among others in the camera app.
A test version of the Huawei Mate 20 (Pro) camera files is in the hands of XDA Developers , which has scanned the code. Of the four new camera features, three use the artificial intelligence of the Kirin 980 chip. Incidentally, it is possible that not all detected features (directly) appear in the camera app.
1. Huawei Mate 20 Pro-camera films with bokeh
In the bokeh effect, the person or object in the foreground is highlighted by blurring the background. Many (more expensive) smartphones use bokeh to shoot portrait photos, but the Huawei Mate 20 (Pro) can also film with bokeh according to the leaked source files.
The camera app contains references to ten bokeh film modes, including stars, hearts and butterflies. These objects are supposed to be placed in the background to give a video the bokeh effect.
2. Live filters
Because the Kirin 980 chip recognizes people and objects live during filming, you can choose filters that are directly applied. The code of the camera software contains the image below, on which the filters are shown. Huawei calls the filters AI Cinema.
3. Underwater mode
A new feature that probably has nothing to do with artificial intelligence is the underwater mode. According to references in the camera software, the mode is meant to make good photos and videos underwater. It is required that you put the Mate 20 (Pro) in a - separately available - waterproof case before you dive into the pool. The phones are not waterproof, only water-resistant.
The underwater mode lets you take photos and videos by pressing the volume buttons. Use the on and off button to switch the camera app on and off.
4. Automatic zoom
The fourth and final feature that probably comes in the Mate 20 (Pro) camera is AI Zoom. When this video mode is enabled, the camera uses artificial intelligence to keep the subject of your video in the picture as well as possible. The zoom level is adjusted automatically here. AI Zoom seems to work only if you film at least 1080p resolution, the AI Cinema mode is enabled and the beauty mode is off.
