Android Pie and iOS 12 compared: two visions on the future
Google and Apple have released the latest versions of their operating systems. We compare the two updates: Android 9.0 (Pie) and iOS 12 .

The big updates for Android and iOS roll out to virtually every modern smartphone. With iOS it is a lot faster than with Android. Nevertheless, Google is working to make its updates easier and therefore faster to get more devices in the future. But how do Android Pie and iOS 12 compare with each other?
Both provide more awareness and peace
In recent years we have become increasingly aware of the role that the smartphone has received in our lives. The word 'smartphone addiction' falls regularly. Both Google and Apple are taking this responsibility this year by making users more aware of their use.
Android does that with Digital Wellbeing. On a new screen in the settings menu you will find, among other things, how much time you spend on apps per day and how often you unlock the phone. Apple has a similar function with Screen Time.
Both operating systems also offer means to reduce usage. For example in the hours before you go to bed. Android Pie and iOS 12 are the first updates so you want to use your smartphone less.
It is also nice that both updates in the notifications provide more peace. Android Pie offers more possibilities to tackle the 'do not disturb' function. iOS 12 offers a new Bedtime Mode, with which you can no longer receive messages at night.
How to catch up with iOS 12: notifications and Photos
Apple is playing a catch-up race in some areas. Some new features of iOS 12 are known to Android users. For example, the notifications have received a considerable upgrade, so they are no longer placed in chronological order as a long list. That makes iOS a lot clearer.
Finally, Apple with iOS 12 is finally expanding the search capabilities of its Photos app. Google has been known for a long time for its excellent Photos app, which uses artificial intelligence to let users search for objects, animals, places or people. This is possible on iOS too.
A third way to catch up with iOS is Autofill. This means that logins and passwords are now also automatically entered on iOS.
In the same way Android also catch up on iOS, but slightly less drastic. With Pie, for example, more attention is paid to privacy, because apps can no longer just watch or listen in the background. Android Pie also offers support for control with gestures and screens with a notch. Apple introduced last year with the iPhone X .
How iOS 12 leads: augmented reality and Siri Shortcuts
In other areas, both operating systems are running ahead of the other with these updates. For example, iOS is better with augmented reality. Although Samsung and Huawei own versions of emoji that you control with your face, is not as smooth and extensive as the Animoji and Memoji on iOS. Also Apple's new app Measure to measure objects in the world via augmented reality is impressive.
More important is the new Siri Shortcuts. Although the Google Assistant is ahead of Siri in almost all areas, Apple's voice assistant now has a really cool new feature. Siri Shortcuts gives iOS users the possibility to put different assignments in a series. You then execute this sequence by pronouncing a self-chosen sentence. In this way, users can greatly expand the functionalities of the assistant.
How Android Pie precedes: artificial intelligence
On the other hand, Android Pie also runs on iOS in an important area: artificial intelligence. Android now adapts to the user from now on. For example, the operating system knows very well which apps you often use at what time, and puts them at the top when you need them. Apps also get shortcuts with functions that you often use.
Apps that you rarely use are removed from the memory immediately after use so that they do not unnecessarily burden the battery. Also, Android remembers what moments you adjust the screen brightness to learn from. In the future Android will keep your preference in the same circumstances.
Two visions on the future
Both Google and Apple are therefore taking great steps this year. Although the companies do not have flashy updates, they improve the basis that already existed. In addition, the tech giants are responding to current events, with more attention for the psychology behind our smartphone use.
With Android Pie and iOS 12, both companies are also cautiously looking to the future. Apple does that with more attention for augmented reality. With all the rumors about the augmented reality glasses of the company and the somewhat exaggerated power of the new iPhones, it is likely that the company will only become more involved in the coming years.
Google's future lies more with artificial intelligence. Android Pie shows the start of an operating system that is really different for everyone, because Googles learns artificial intelligence from our use. This impressive technology runs more in the background and therefore does not stand out. That does not make it less important.
